CON contributes directly to HP gains when gaining a new level, for this reason it is recommended to max con when levelling. It is rumored that con from eq gives better overall gains than con from spells.

I usually have a set of eq that gives con that I will swap on during the fight that will give me enough XP to level (I use a trigger that watches my exp needed to next level and automatically swaps out gear when I'm at 200k or less XP needed)

CON > max now contributes to your DR.
